What Is Organic Salmon

What is Organic Salmon?

The "Wagyu Beef" of Seafood

As technology and modern farming practices continue evolving to better support seafood sustainability and environmental responsibility, there are increasing opportunities to revitalize the ways we source and produce seafood.

In 2022, we were extremely proud to begin offering Certified EU Organic Scottish Salmon, or "the Wagyu Beef of Seafood", as we like to call it.

Similar to the mystical Wagyu Beef, our Organic Salmon are expertly raised under rigorous standards to reward a superior quality and an unparalleled, melt-in-your-mouth flavor profile.

But what IS organic salmon, really?

JUMP TO SPECIFIC SECTION:

Organic Salmon Certification

Organic Salmon is rare, and something that has not historically been offered because there is no established organic standard in the United States.

That’s why North Coast’s Organic Salmon are regulated and certified by both EU Organic and the UK Soil Administration, respected leaders in the organic food industry, which enforce the strictest aquaculture standards in the world.

Every year, these independent organizations inspect, audit, and certify every step of the process (even the sales department) to ensure that organic, sustainable, environmentally responsible practices are being followed.

EU Organic Salmon - Farmed in the Wild

Our Organic Salmon are meticulously farm raised in open ocean waters off the Northeast corner of the Isle of Skye, Scotland.

Each salmon grows naturally over the course of 2-3 years to its fully matured size. The whole process is meant to replicate the wild conditions a salmon would grow in naturally, but within controlled conditions.

This is why we proudly declare that our farmed salmon is “Ocean Raised” or “Farmed in the Wild”. This is different from wild caught salmon, which are primarily caught in Alaska and only during certain times of the year.

Organic Salmon Standards

So, what makes organic farmed raised salmon different? In summary:

  • Absolutely NO Antibiotics or Growth Hormones
  • NO Artificial Additives or Preservatives
  • Free of Chemicals and GMOs
  • Fed a 100% organic diet - free of any antibiotics, growth hormones, or preservatives.
  • Open ocean farms provide an abundance of room to swim

First and foremost, the principle “You are what you eat” applies to Salmon just as it applies to humans. For this reason, we are incredibly particular when it comes to what our Organic Salmon eat.

Fed a 100% Organic Diet

Our Scottish Salmon are fed a 100% Organic diet, which means that every single ingredient in their diet must be certified organic with absolutely no growth hormones, chemicals, or GMOs (genetically modified organisms).

Their nutrient rich, high-fat diet is made up of oily fish (like anchovy, herring, and mackerel) and plant ingredients.

This customized diet rewards each salmon with exceptionally high levels of heart healthy Omega 3 fatty acids, which is healthy for both the fish and for the consumer.

When you see “color added” on our farmed organic salmon, this refers to astaxanthin, which is an antioxidant and naturally occurring pigment that is incorporated into our organic salmon’s diet.

Wild Salmon also consume astaxanthin through their diet in the wild (through krill and other small crustaceans), which contributes to their vibrant color.

This is why astaxanthin is incorporated into farmed salmon diets, as it is necessary for proper salmon nourishment while also giving the salmon its signature color and nutritional benefits.

Plenty of Room to Swim

These ocean farms have a MAXIMUM ratio of 1% fish to 99% water, and each sea pen is over 6 stories deep with a circumference of over 4 NBA basketball courts.

This is to ensure that there is plenty of room for salmon to swim freely & grow naturally. Although it is interesting to note that by natural instinct, these salmon do tend to congregate together while they swim.

Why the Isle of Skye, Scotland?

We evaluated over 30 sites in Europe before settling in on the Isle of Skye to farm our Scottish Salmon.

This is an extremely remote location, with the closest “town” being 13 miles away.

The exposed, open ocean farms off the Isle of Skye, Scotland provide:

  • Exceptional water quality – stable temps, high salinity, high oxygen
  • Constant circulation of water – flowing tides naturally refresh 2x/day
  • Strong, wild ocean currents – for salmon to swim & grow strong
  • High water flow rates & natural circulation to keep water clean and fresh

All of these qualities give life to the phrase: “Farmed in the Wild”.

Is Organic Salmon Good for You?

Organic Salmon is a superfood! Salmon is packed with nutrition, providing a plethora of health benefits.

Scottish Salmon are packed with a CRAZY amount of Omega 3 fatty acids, over 4,900 mg per 6 ounce portion!

Omega 3 fatty acids are VITAL to proper functioning of our bodies and minds, and have been shown to improve heart health, reduce inflammation, lower blood cholesterol, reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, improve eye & skin health, and improve symptoms of depression… the list goes on & on.

Organic Salmon are also protein packed and an excellent source of Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, and Selenium.

Learn more about the benefits of Omega 3s and why you should eat fish regularly on our Seafood Nutrition blog.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the American Heart Association (AHA) both recommend that you should be eating fish two to three times per week, a minimum of 8 ounces, in order to maintain a healthy diet.

Every five years, the USDA revises their Dietary Guidelines, and each time seafood gets a bigger shout out for being a nutritional powerhouse. This recommendation was reinforced in the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and is also supported by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Is Organic Salmon Good for the Environment?

Certified Organic Salmon have a Neutral Marine Footprint, which means that the farming and harvesting process does no harm to the ocean bottom of the surrounding ecosystem, working in harmony with the environment.

Eat Salmon to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Research has shown that farmed Salmon has a lower carbon footprint than ANY other center of the plate protein source (chicken, beef, pork, etc.), requiring no land or additional water resources, making organic farm raised salmon a sustainable and environmentally responsible protein choice.

We are going to have 9 to 10 billion people by 2050 and, with our land-based agriculture, we are maxed out on freshwater resource and arable land.

Therefore, we must turn to our oceans to help us feed our planet.
